1. S&P 500 Had Best Month Since 2020

S&P 500 gained +10.4% in April 2026, its strongest monthly performance since November 2020. The index closed at a record 7,209.01 on April 30. Strong earnings and optimism around AI helped fuel the rally.

After a volatile first quarter, April became a major rebound month for U.S. equities. It showed investors were still willing to buy growth despite inflation and geopolitical concerns.

2. Nasdaq Surged 15.3%

Nasdaq Composite rose +15.3% in April, its best month since April 2020.

Large-cap tech companies and semiconductor names led gains, as investors focused on earnings growth and AI-related spending trends.

Many of the month’s biggest winners came from chipmakers, cloud infrastructure, and mega-cap technology stocks.

3. U.S. Inflation Rose to 3.5%

On April 30, the March PCE inflation report showed prices rising 3.5% year-over-year and +0.7% month-over-month. It was one of the hottest monthly readings in years, mainly due to higher fuel and energy prices.

Markets immediately adjusted expectations for fewer cuts in 2026. Higher inflation can keep borrowing costs elevated for longer.

4. Fed Held Rates at 3.50%–3.75%

On April 29, Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady at 3.50%–3.75%.

Officials signaled they still need clearer evidence that inflation is slowing before starting any easing cycle.

While no surprise decision was made, the tone remained cautious. Higher-for-longer rates can affect stocks, housing, and business borrowing.

5. Brent Oil Briefly Hit $118

Brent Crude Oil surged late in April and briefly traded near $118/barrel.

The move came as markets reacted to renewed Middle East tensions and fears that supply routes near the Strait of Hormuz could be disrupted. Oil had one of its strongest months of the year.

Higher oil prices often increase inflation pressure worldwide.

6. AI Chip Stocks Reached New Highs

On April 24, Intel gave stronger guidance, helping boost confidence across the semiconductor sector.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index reached a fresh record high during the month as investors continued backing AI infrastructure demand.

Chipmakers remained one of the strongest-performing groups in 2026. The AI investment boom continued to support markets.

7. Alphabet Earnings Boosted Sentiment

On April 30, Alphabet shares rose +10% in one day after stronger-than-expected results, helped by cloud growth and advertising revenue.

The report supported broader market sentiment.

8. U.S. Dollar Strengthened in Final Week

U.S. Dollar Index strengthened throughout April, finishing the month near 98.95.

The dollar was supported by a more hawkish Federal Reserve outlook after stronger inflation data, while geopolitical tensions also increased demand for safe-haven assets.
A stronger dollar can pressure gold, commodities, and emerging-market currencies.

9. Gold Rebounded Late April

Gold rebounded sharply on April 30, with spot gold rising 1.7% to $4,618.67/oz after falling to a one-month low the previous day.

U.S. gold futures also settled 1.5% higher at $4,629.60.

The rebound came as the U.S. dollar weakened, making gold more attractive for global buyers.
Gold remained highly sensitive to dollar moves, Fed expectations, and geopolitical uncertainty.
